Asset Finance Explained: How to Fund Equipment, Vehicles and Machinery
Share
Buying equipment, vehicles or machinery outright can tie up cash your business needs elsewhere. Asset finance lets you spread that cost over time while you put the asset to work straight away. Here's how it works and how to choose the right structure.
What is asset finance?
Asset finance is funding secured against the asset you're acquiring - or against assets you already own. Because the asset itself provides security, it's often easier to arrange than an unsecured loan, and repayments are spread across the useful life of the equipment.
Hire purchase vs leasing
- Hire purchase: you pay in instalments and own the asset outright at the end of the term. Good when you want to keep the equipment long term.
- Finance lease: you rent the asset over an agreed period and use it as if it were yours, with the option to continue, upgrade or return it. Good for assets that date quickly.
- Operating lease / contract hire: shorter-term rental, often with maintenance included - common for vehicle fleets.
What can you fund?
Almost any tangible business asset: commercial vehicles and fleets, plant and machinery, manufacturing equipment, agricultural kit, IT hardware, catering and medical equipment, and more. Refinancing existing assets to release capital ('asset refinance') is also possible.
Typical terms
Terms usually run from 1 to 7 years, aligned to the expected life of the asset. Deposits vary, and rates depend on the asset type, your business profile and the term. Because the lender can recover the asset if payments stop, pricing is often competitive compared with unsecured borrowing.
Why businesses use it
- Preserves cash and working capital.
- Spreads cost over the period the asset earns its keep.
- Predictable, fixed repayments help budgeting.
- Can improve access to newer, more efficient equipment.
